Employers, insurance companies and other institutions have until 28 February each year to provide the tax authorities with the data required to process their tax returns.
By submitting their tax returns electronically, citizens can help ensure that their returns are processed more quickly. Last year, nearly 14 percent of notices could be automated, eliminating the need for staff processing in these cases.
In order to submit the tax return paperlessly, a user account must be created at www.elster.de using the tax identification number. Detailed instructions on how to do this can also be found on the Elster website.

Receipts are only requested if necessary and should not be sent with the return. It is sufficient to keep these for possible queries
The "ElsterFormular" program was available for the last time for the 2019 income tax return. Citizens who have previously used the "ElsterFormular" program can transfer the data from the previous year to "My ELSTER".
