What documents do I need for the tax class election?

Proof of identity (e.g. identity card or passport)
Document proving the marriage or civil partnership (e.g. certified copy from the new family register or certified marriage certificate, certificate of registered civil partnership). These documents do not have to be submitted to the tax office if the registration office/municipality has already entered the marriage in the system.
If the marriage was entered into abroad, this must be reported to the registration office, regardless of citizenship. A tax class change can only be carried out after the registration office has recognized the marriage concluded abroad and entered it in the electronic system.
