WARNING - Fake tax assessment notices in circulation

Cases of forged income tax assessments have recently come to light in several federal states.

"Notices for 2023 regarding income tax, solidarity surcharge" are also circulating in paper form at Baden-Württemberg, with a Baden-Württemberg tax office or the "tax authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany" as the sender. The recipients are requested to pay income tax within a short period of time.

The bank details that have become known in this context at Baden-Württemberg have been blocked, so transfers to this account number are no longer possible.

However, it cannot be ruled out that other similar incorrect notices and bank details are in circulation. We therefore ask the public to be more vigilant.

These clues make it easy to recognize whether the mail in your letterbox is a genuine tax assessment notice:

  • Tax assessment notices are always issued by the locally responsible tax office, stating the correct and complete address.

You can find your local tax office here and display the correct address of the tax office.

  • There is no designation "Tax Authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany" or the seal "Tax Office - Tax Authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany" at the end of the forged notice.
  • The tax numbers in Baden-Württemberg contain ten digits.
  • Notices from the tax offices always contain explanatory texts, information on legal remedies and data protection notices.
  • The telephone and fax numbers given in the forged notices are also conspicuous and do not match the respective location.

When receiving documents from the Baden-Württemberg tax offices, please always check the tax number and identification number stated on the document against your own tax number and identification number. In the event of any concerns or anomalies, the responsible tax office should be contacted immediately.

Anyone who receives a forged document is asked to file a criminal complaint with the local police station and not to transfer the alleged tax debt under any circumstances.

Taxpayers who choose to receive their tax assessment electronically are also protected against such fraudsters. If you choose electronic notification, you will not receive the notice by post. You will be notified by e-mail that the assessment notice is available for data retrieval (this e-mail does not contain a notice). Immediately after receiving the notification e-mail, you can retrieve the decision or other letters in PDF format in "My Elster" or in the software you are using.
